Arena Air Quality

The Parks Operations is responsible for the maintenance of the Ice Resurfacing Equipment ( all City of Windsor Ice Resurfacers are Zamboni's and are powered by propane gas-LP) and the Arena's ice edgers.  This equipment is maintained and inspected by our Equipment Division, Certified Motor Mechanics.  The Ice Resurfacer engine is tuned to Manufacture's specifications and records of emission testing are kept .  The Equipment Division also monitors this equipment through weekly on-site inspections or through work requests by Arena Staff.  We have also requisitioned a portable monitoring unit that will record emissions during our weekly inspections.  Our mechanics, as well as being licensed to repair gasoline combustion engines are, also licensed to repair propane gas engines.  We have an excellent rapport with Zamboni Canada who advise us of any equipment updates and provide support for any technical issues relating to the maintenance of our Resurfacing Fleet.  The following are some of our policies regarding the equipment;  1)  The ice resurfacer is to be started prior to the operation as to warm the engine, this will ensure the engine is operating at optimum performance levels;  2)  The arena exhaust fans are turned on prior to commencing the ice resurfacing operation and are left on approximately 5-10 minutes after the resurfacing operation is completed; 3)  The exhaust fans are turned on during all ice edging operations.  Note, the ice edging operation as well as the ice maintenance (shaving ) are done at non-peak times (day or midnight shift)  We have purchased two new propane powered ice edgers and will replace the remaining gasoline powered ice edgers with propane in the future.  An important component in an Air Quality Management Program is sampling and monitoring and recording.  We have in the past had the Health Unit sample and monitor our air quality at all of our indoor ice arenas.  We are purchasing our own hand held monitoring devices and will sample and record the air quality in our indoor arenas.  The safety and well-being of our arena participants, spectators and staff is paramount.  If you have any questions or concerns or require any further information, contact a WMHA representative of the Parks & Recreation Division of the City of Windsor.
