The calls are out to all the players and goalies in both Atom and Peewee giving the times and the arenas for the weekend of September 6 and 7.  If you do not have your call by Wednesday morning, September 3, please call either Rob Lapointe (519-974-0936) or myself (519-979-1675) to get those times.  The first day will allow the players and goalies to get their skate legs back and participate in a few drills.  Sunday will be an evaluation day (not time–trials) for the skaters to prepare them for their three scrimmage games that will take place over the following two weekends.  The goalies will have a clinic on Saturday and Sunday with their evaluations following on Monday, September 8.  The players will be called with the times and arenas for the scrimmage games starting Wednesday Sept 10.  Be aware that all Atom and Peewee players will be on the ice both Saturday and Sunday mornings the weekend of September 13 and 14 and September 20 and 21.

Volunteers are needed to sign the players in and hand out the bibs for each of the five days of the preseason.  (The sixth day will not require signing in) If you are willing to give some time, it would be greatly appreciated.  This is a great way for high school students to get in some of their volunteer hours.  The optimum number of people at the desk is two.  Please call me at 519-979-1675 or Rob Lapointe at 519-974-0936.

Girls Dressing Rooms

For those parents of girls who are coming into Atom from Novice or are new to our Association, there is a limited time for girls to be in the team dressing room.  In the WMHA, girls start changing separately from the boys at the Atom level.  According to our by-laws:

“Female participants will not be allowed into the dressing room before games until 10 minutes before game time.  Any (male) player arriving after this time will have to wait to dress until after the room empties.  After games, the female players must leave the room before the male players remove their equipment.”

This rule will be strictly enforced.

Mothers and other non- player females in the Team Dressing Rooms

As the players get older, they mature at different rates.  With this in mind, there are boys who are not comfortable with mothers in the dressing rooms, especially at the Peewee level.  I understand that skate tying can be an issue.  Perhaps practicing with your child before the season starts would be helpful or working something out with one of the other parents.  From last year’s experience, there were always coaches willing to help with skates in the dressing room.  Talk to your son’s coach – he may have a suggestion on how to best accommodate your personal situation.   We have to consider all the players involved.  Thank you for understanding the reasoning behind this decision.

In the same vein, there are no fathers other males allowed in the girls dressing rooms as well.

This policy includes the pre-season as well.

How are the teams formed?

For both Atom and Peewee, the players’ skills are evaluated by a panel of coaches and trainers.  Next, they are placed on scrimmage teams and play 2 or 3 games against other scrimmage teams with the perspective coaches in attendance.  The Tier One coaches then meet and draft their teams, followed by the Tier Two coaches.  Please note: the coaches each pick their own team in a pre-established sequence. Once all teams are formed, the players are notified by their new coach and given the information they require to start the season.  For the first three weeks, these teams are considered “flexible”, meaning that changes can be made between the two tiers to best meet the needs of the players involved.  After this time, there will be no changes between Tier One and Tier Two.

Goalies

If a player has registered as a goalie, he/she must remain as a goalie for the season.   The number of goalies per team (up to two) will be determined by the number of goalies registered.  Tier Two will be the first division to carry two goalies and then Tier One.

All volunteers for the regular season require a police clearance and a “speakout “card.  All team officials working behind the bench require either a coach’s card or a trainer’s card as well.   Speakout and a police clearance are not enough.  If you are in need of any of the above clinics, please sign up early to ensure yourself a spot.  You will be asked to provide a cheque for the appropriate amount but will be reimbursed once you take the clinic.

I look forward to the start of the new season even though it’s always such a hectic time of year.  Please remember that we are all volunteers doing our best to get your child on the ice and off to great hockey season – sometimes patience will be required!  Last minute changes to schedules may have to be made or any other of a multitude of variables could come into play – remember we will be doing our best.  Have a relaxing, enjoyable summer and I look forward to seeing you in the arenas.
